BROCHURE

RECENT ADVANCES IN BIOINFORMATICS FOR QUALITY LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION

Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University

The first Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in South Asia was established in 1989 with its head quarters in Chennai with the name Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (popularly
abbreviated as TANUVAS) realizing the importance of education and research in Animal and Fisheries Sciences so as to increase its productivity towards better income generation for the farmers. TANUVAS has been conferred with the prestigious “Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institution Award-2011”, recognizing its outstanding performance in education, research and extension in the country in the field of agricultural sciences including veterinary, animal and fisheries sciences at the 84th Foundation Day celebrations of ICAR on 16.07.2012 at New Delhi. TANUVAS is the first veterinary university in the country to bag this coveted award. Presently, four veterinary colleges, one food science college, one Institute of poultry production and management, one fisheries college, six research stations, eighteen University Training and Research Centres, three farmers training centres, one ATIC and eleven Laboratories for animal disease diagnosis are functioning under this university.

Madras Veterinary College
The Madras Veterinary College is in Vepery, Chennai, India. The college was established on October 1, 1903, in a small building known as Dobbin Hall. The college became affiliated with the University of Madras in 1935, and was the constituent unit of TNAU in 1976.This is the first college to offer the bachelor's degree in Veterinary Medicine in India. In 1989, the college was affiliated with TANUVAS. At present the college has 32 departments and offers various degree and diploma courses in Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology.

Department of Bioinformatics & ARIS Cell
The Dept. of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, New Delhi has established a nationwide Bioinformatics network in India called BTISNet in 1986-87 with more than 162 centres. The main objective of this network is to harness the scientific knowledge of rapid advancement in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology and sustainable utilization of biological resources for the betterment of nation.

The Bioinformatics Centre at Madras Veterinary College has been identified as one such node in the network which was established in the year 1990-1991 to cater to the needs of scientists of Veterinary, Animal & Fishery Sciences in the field of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology. The Centre has been providing computational facilities, bioinformatics –related services to its users. The centre is equipped with state-of-art services and facilities in terms of hardware, software, information storage and retrieval and an in-house wetlab to carry out molecular biology works. Major activities of the centre include human resource development, research, information retrieval, database creation etc., So far, (1999 to November 2012) this centre has trained more than 1000 scientists, research scholars, faculties in the area of Bioinformatics. Two PG courses namely, M.Sc., Bioinformatics and PG Diploma in Bioinformatics are being offered at this centre. Research in the area of Drug discovery/docking, Lead optimization, Epitope prediction, Microarray analysis, Pathway analysis, Database creation, Modelling and Comparative Genomics are carried out at this centre.

About Chennai

The East India Company established its presence in southern India on the Bay of Bengal in 1639 with the establishment of Fort St. George. The city of Chennai, formerly known as Madras, grew up around the fort area. It now serves as the capital of Tamil Nadu and is the fourth largest city in India, with over six million inhabitants.

Chennai sprawls over a large area yet, in spite of recent industrial growth, seems less congested than other large Indian cities. Its role as a trade center is furthered by rail, road, and air connections in addition to its seaport. It presents both modern and traditional charm, its many British influences juxtaposed with Tamil-Hindu traditions. The Tamil Nadu government uses Fort St. George today, and within the compound is a museum holding many remembrances of the East India Company and the British period. Nearby is St. Mary's Church, the oldest Anglican Church in India. In contrast, Sri Parthasarathy Temple, dedicated to Krishna, dates to the 8th century AD; and Kapaleeswarar Temple, honouring Shiva, dates to the 13th century AD. San Thome Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Church built by the Portuguese in 1504 and named for the Christian disciple ("Doubting Thomas") who lived and taught here in the firsthe first century.

Chennai is also home to the Theosophical Society, which holds meetings along the Adyar River under a huge banyan tree (diameter of approximately 250 feet). Marina Beach, east of the city, is known as the second longest in the world, stretching for several miles. Kalakshetra (Temple of Art) was founded in 1936 to train and support interest in bharatanatyam, the traditional dance of the region. Music and dance performances are given in the city throughout the year. The National Art Gallery and Government Museum displays an extensive collection of artifacts in its archaeology section and bronze gallery. Chennai can be extremely hot and humid, but does benefit from cooling sea breezes in the late afternoons and evenings.
